In this century, one of the best ways to improve literacy in the world is to help children and young people access digital tools for their personal development.
I had the privilege to work on a 3-months project tagged #Inspire Us Collection" with Library Aid Africa and Worldreader.
The program was aimed at helping girls and young women to have access to digital content through the Worldreader mobile App, equipped with several inspiring and amazing stories of young women and some other self-help books, likewise addressing issues around gender stereotype.
The most interesting part of this project was the Physical and Virtual book club, where I and my partner (Amb. Rachael) engaged our members with book reviews and sharing values with one another.
During this project, I realized that the issue of literacy is beyond the ability to read and write alone. But also the ability to comprehend, adapt, and utilize the available tools for relevant purposes.
One of our challenges then was that 80% of these children do not have access to digital tools like smartphones, laptops, or desktop computers.
About 5% who have access to smartphones were able to follow through some of these contents.
However, we had to engage some of their teachers by getting the app on their phones, go through the contents, and join the students during our physical book reviews.
We had a good time with the Virtual Book Club with the numbers of participants we had. Although, efforts had to be put to encourage young women to go read and share experiences with one another on the group.
Giving incentives for reinforcement also spur a significant interest at the heart of our participants.
As Ambassadors, it's our responsibility to collaborate and bring more innovative ways to help both the boy child and the girl child have access to required tools that will help them live their lives without prejudice.
