ESTHER IS NOW A GLOBAL AUTHOR
A few months into my fellowship journey with Teach For Nigeria, I had some deep conversations with some selected students and it dawned on me that there is so much work to be done.
Sometimes, too much of problems might be a distraction for one to know where to start. I'm glad that I did my best to put some things into the structure. Having in mind that it's better done one step at a time.
From a series of conversations with Esther, I got to know her well when she shared some of her stories with me. I would call it "Esther's Life Map", just as we do at Teach for Nigeria.
I started seeing myself in her journey and began to think of the little way I could be of help. I could identify some of her strengths and weakness, and I'm proud of the progress she's making today.
I could remember Esther telling me that she had written a couple of stories while she was 14 or thereabout, hoping they might be published someday.
I asked her why happened to the book, and she said she gave it to someone but she was so unpleased when she saw a piece of the story with a child in the village.
She lost all she had written.
I felt sorry for her because I know how disappointing that could be.
I asked her; Esther, do you know that you would have become an author at the age of 15 if that book was published then? I felt she didn't understand what I meant that day. But I could only reassure her that someday, she will become an author but she has to put in the work.
I became more intentional about her and some of her colleagues who I've deeply connected with through their struggles and stories.
12 months down the line, I'm glad to share with you that Esther Remilekun Odekunle is one of the 33 authors who shared amazing stories in Teach for All's " First ever" eBook titled "What Leadership Do We Need Now?".
This is a dream come true, right?
How did this happen?
Maybe it could be a story for another day.
But the truth is that she has just begun the journey to live that purposeful life she craved.
I have a list of them who amaze me with their uniqueness and I hope it gets easier and better for us.
Am I proud of this feat?
Certainly, I am.
Thanks to Sanaya Bharucha & Teach For All for making this happen.
Congratulations once again, champ.
P:S. The book will be available on the Teach for All website by September 7 2022 and will be virtually launched on September 8, 2022.
